'Minecraft' Mod Fosters the Collaboration Of Climate Change

A Minecraft modder has introduced new game-related issues for players to address in the form of climate change. Nick Porillo's GlobalWarming mod alters the climate according to certain actions, like melting ores. The temperature will rise as carbon emissions rise, leading to intense storms, forest fires, and a drop in snowfall levels as climate change begins to take hold.

Planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide could aid in combating the effects of climate change. To combat the issue on a bigger scale you can buy carbon offsets, which give other players a bounty of trees to complete -- that is in line with one of the themes of working together to fight climate change.

"If the majority of players do not agree to play near-carbon-neutrally in the way they play and play, then the carbon score will increase in-game. Porillo explained to Motherboard that players will start paying back the debt they have incurred once the damage has been done. "The idea is that players should put in a bit more effort from the beginning to not emit much smoke, and to avoid paying the ultimate cost."

He plans to add more features, including scorecards that let you see who the most carbon-neutral players are. It will also allow you to find your carbon footprint, and adding methane as a third greenhouse gas. This mod is compatible with Minecraft Server Java Edition. You can download it from GitHub.
