The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.

The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Mostza route. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban and its northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a kilometer close to the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and hundreds of cyclists were present at a celebration to officially open the tunnel''s 2.1-kilometer-long length.

A total of NIS 25 million were put into in the project, budgeted by the Elkin''s Ministry The Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.


Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the goal to transform the idea of transport in Jerusalem. "The new tunnel, which connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing cycle routes within the city, as well as the ones that will be constructed within the various neighborhoods. The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure Tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.
