The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel in Israel and was inaugurated as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and the heritage minister Ze''evElkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon Chairman of Gihon and a plethora of other cyclists were also in attendance.

Elkin, who heads the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the city''s tourism growth and in the creation innovative tourist attractions and ventures that connect the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. Elkin''s ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin stated, "The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for realizing our vision to change the concept transportation throughout Jerusalem." Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike routes. The tunnel will also be made paved in its various areas. It will also increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced electrical and safety systems, in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.
