The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which runs through the capital.

The tunnel runs through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza path. The tunnel's southern entrance can be found in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half a km away from the Kerem junction.

Jerusalem was a popular tourist destination because of its rich and fascinating history. Elkin stated that, in addition to its rich history and modern amenities, tourism has also been integrated into Jerusalem's city. "The launch (of the tunnel) is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular tourist destination for all kinds of visitors across Israel and around the world."


Elkin, who heads the project along with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests hundreds of millions in Jerusalem's tourism development and in the creation innovative attractions and ventures that link the glorious past of Jerusalem to the future. I encourage cyclists to take advantage of a a well-maintained, modern cycling route overlooking the unique nature of Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality, and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

The current works include road construction, installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through all year round.
