Children to Design new National Park In Minecraft

Children to design a national park in Minecraft

Students in Adelaide, Australia, have been asked to design the national park in Minecraft which could then be constructed in the real world.

Students aged nine to twelve were asked to create their own 3D models within the world.

The results could be used to improve existing national parks around Adelaide.

The government has provided nearly $10.4m Australian dollars (PS5.4m), for the redesigns.

It was determined to find a fresh way to engage young people in its processes.

"This competition is part of a community engagement project asking people of all ages what sort of facilities would encourage them to spend more time in national parks," reads the Natural Resources, Adelaide website that announced the prize.

"The State government has allocated $10.4m for parks projects. So some of the ideas you brainstorm in class could end up being implemented."

It added that the only rule is that any design must be possible to be realized in the real world.

"The parks features should be in harmony with the natural surroundings by taking into consideration the creatures and plants that live there."

Ideas could include trails for mountain biking, bushwalking or horse riding, barbecues and picnic areas - or something completely different." it suggested.

Redesigning the slums

There is a growing trend towards creating ever more ambitious designs in Minecraft.

As part of an educational project, the Danish government has been mapping the entire country.

And in 2012 Mojang the creators of Minecraft joined forces with the UN to assist them in designing cities in countries in need.

They recreated public spaces in the game and then shared the game with groups of the community where they could design the spaces.

The project has led to new ideas for green spaces in Kiberia the biggest slum in Nairobi and the tool was also utilized to design a new waterfront in Les Cayes, Haiti''s third largest city.

The Adelaide competition ends on 12 June and the winner will be announced a month later.

The winners will be awarded a government-funded trip in the Belair National Park.
