Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an easy game that is included) has a major new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth trying again.

As we mentioned in the release Candidate stage one of the major features for users in this release is vastly easier mods, both small packs and complete games. Minetest used to allow users to browse and download mods directly from the game. However it now downloads all dependencies mods require making it easier to locate what you require and load it into the game. It''s no more necessary to download a single mod, and then search for the components it requires.

The built-in base game "Minetest Game" also went through some improvements. While it''s pretty basic by its own, it can serve as a great base to show off the engine and extend by adding modifications. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now includes crafting guides, 5 more wood variations as well as ambient sounds for lava as well as active furnaces, new translations , and numerous bugs fixed. It continues to grow slowly and gradually into something a bit larger out of the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing as you point at objects, freely bindable mouse buttons, name tags for players now have a semi-transparent background there''s a caverns feature for the flat map generation, the ''place'' and ''fig'' keys can now be customized, lots of modding enhancements and numerous bugs fixes, such as stopping players being able to accessing inventories of others.
