I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I know they have the correct IP address. I have tried multiple solutions to no avail. I can however connect to the server via other computers connected through the same router. However, this only works if I have it set up to "cracked".

I tried disabling the firewall on both my router computer and my host computer. I also tried using a different computer to host the server and changing the port. All of the solutions I tried gave me the same message: "Cannot Reach Server" to my friends. However, I was able and connected perfectly fine. Here is some potentially useful information:

Host computer

Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

Please let me know if there are any other details you require.

You need to forward ports (router configurations) and then open an incoming Port in your firewall (OS Settings). Start here.

no luck

I tried that. It didn’t work.

What error did you get? Does minecraft have a manual about hosting a server? Does it indicate which port it uses for this purpose? You must forward the correct port (assign a static IP to the server) to the correct LANIP of the server. Make sure that no firewall is blocking the port at the server.

On my friend''s computer, it says, "Cannot reach server".

Most ISPs offer dynamic WAN IP. It is important to check your WAN IP regularly as it might change. You might also need to include a port number such as 64.6.115.194.12345.

I found the problem(s).

I got it to work...actually...quite a while ago. It was too late to post it.

However, I gave my friend an external IP address to connect to. I used my home network''s internal IP address to connect to computers in my home network. On top of that, I set my router''s port forwarding settings and forwarded port 25565 to my internal IP (Server IP).

I''m sure many of you said it before, but I didn''t understand it enough.

We are grateful!

Isn''t it possible that your external IP address changes all the time? If your external IP address changes, wouldn''t that mean you should give it to him every time he wanted to play? What happens if the friend''s IP address changes? Am I missing something about dynamic IPs?

Your ISP owns a range of IP addresses. Each time a user connects to an internet connection, an IP address is assigned. This expires at a certain date/time. If the user is still connected, the expiry date/time may be extended. The IP that the user has previously used will remain available to another user once he disconnects.

In the dmz (Applications & Gaming> DMZ) of your router, you should enter the host computer’s ip addresses. Check if it works (list the routing table). If it works you will need to give the computer a static router address (Setup > Advanced Routeting). It''s like a 192.168.1.100 address. I don''t understand your manual and can''t help you. Your friend''s computers should be placed in the dmzs on their routers. You might also need disable the router firewall. Good luck.

Although there are many posters, I believe you can find the ip address in the routing table of the router. I believe it is in Setup> Advanced Routing. Or keep it simple. Try the whole thing without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user --> internet --> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER-->port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

Also, make sure to read the posts before you comment.

OK, now let''s see what you can do:

-Go to your web browser using any device connected to the network and type "what''s my IP address?" Four strings of numbers, varying in length, and separated by dots, will show up. (if not, try a different search provider) That is your external IP address. This information should be given to your server members. -Next, open Command Prompt. Type "ipconfig". The first string is your internal IP Address. This is used to connect your "game" computer and any other computers directly connected to your router. This up can change so you''ll need to keep checking it. You can also edit the saved server name (only for computers connected directly to the router). This is the hard part. Now, go to your internet browser. Type your external IP into your address bar and hit Enter. If your router can be configured via an internet browser, the router setup webpage should appear. Take a screenshot and post it in this thread. I will tell you where to go from there.

NOTE: Your friends might not be able connect. Please post the information on your router''s setup page. I will assist you with your setup. However, you can try to let your friends connect at this point, but I don''t know that it will work; It didn''t for me.

Please read the entire instruction manual.

lebalen said: hello i did everything that you typed in here but nothing helps!!! Please help me! Click to expand...

I asked you to send me an image of your router settings. You can type the external IP address directly into your browser''s URL bar and tell me how it looks. If nothing appears, your router may not support port forwarding. Once you reach the page, press the [Print Screen] key on your keyboard. Next, open any image editor and paste the screenshot into a new photo. Save the picture and then post it to this thread. Simple.

If you are having trouble understanding my instructions, please send me your Skype/Yahoo username and I will help you navigate the process with Skype/Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I''ve been having sort of the same problem lately. I haven''t been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had at least ten servers on my list and they all said "Cannot connect to server."

A few days before this happened, my brother and me had made our own server. He port-forwarded and everything. I was able access it fine for the first few day, but then I couldn’t connect to it again unless I was using his computer, which is where we host the server. I don''t know if this has anything to do with what is going on, but I thought I would just include that. I can still connect if I use his computer and his only laptop. He can''t connect to any other servers than ours.

I don''t see any reason why we shouldn''t be connected.

I know he had port-forwarding issues, but we were able, for a few days, to connect to other servers. Then everything went black. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide in this regard.

To add onto this, we got a new router right around the time that our problems started. I don’t see how this would have helped, but maybe there’s something I can do with this router. Please let me know.

@Seanic

1. Talk to your internet provider and find out if you have any problems

2: Make sure you have the correct IP address for the servers you tried to connect to. If necessary, include a port number. Not necessary: If it is 25565 (which is the default Minecraft port), you don''t need it. Example: IP address 12.3.4.56 Port number 25566 IP Address including port: 12.3.4.56.25566

3: If you still have problems, post your IP address to the forums. I will be able to check if there are any other issues. I will also need to know the time it will be on. So, create a time range and post it. Don''t worry, it will only work if I get a signal. I will not do anything other than what is allowed.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I''ll do my best to make it possible for me to turn the server on at some point in the future, but it may take a while.

But I thought that I would let you know that I can connect with one server other that the one we host. It''s the only server that shows up online and I can connect to it.

Apr 22, 2012

You should also remember that not all public server are available 24/7. Even the servers listed as being online 24/7, they aren''t always online. There are certain factors like server maintanence, power outages, or crashes that affect those. This could be the reason why you aren''t connected to them.

ITS Simple. I had the same problem #1. Download SimplePort Forwarding #2. To Allow something in the Start Page, I don’t remember what it was. It was something to do with Java or The Jar. Check youtube #3. If they still have trouble connecting, then give them the Internet Router Password. If they still cannot connect, unlock their Internet Router or give them a Password.

I have a question for everyone. I have an Normal server and my friends can connect to it. I created a BukkitServer but I cannot join it. My friends cant, and everythings the same as the Normal Server. Do I need to Port anything else? ?

Your internal IP address could have changed. Go to the server computer and click Start. Click My Network Places. Double-click on the internet link it is using. In the dialog box that pops up, click on the Support tab (if the server is Windows XP) and it should tell you the IP address. You should now be able to update the port forwarding settings and forward to the new IP. Note: While I don’t know which tab Windows Vista or 7 shows the IP address, I can assure that the IP address is located in that dialog box.

If you are unable to access your router''s settings page using a web browser, by entering the external IP address in the address bar, then your router is not accessible. Does not have a settings page accessable with a web browser, in which case you will need to use compatible software to access the settings, or 2. Does not have a settings page at all, in which case it does not support port-forwarding, and you will need to use an alternative method to forward the server port to the server, or just get a router that does*.

Note: I have a Linksys Wireless/Wired router that supports port-forwarding. You could base your decision around that (if you decide to buy a new router).
