An appeal has been launched to raise PS200,000 to ensure Scarborough''s new PS2m lifeboat is not left beached.

The Mersey lifeboat currently used by the seaside community is scheduled to be replaced with a more advanced version in 2015.

The new rescue craft will require a special launch vehicle, which will cost PS1.5m more.

While the launcher will be part paid for by two legacies, PS200,000 still needs to be raised, said the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

''Reach our target''

Scarborough will be the first station to receive a Shannon Class lifeboat, the first modern RNLI craft powered by water jets instead of propellers.

The Shannon is designed to be mostly launched and recovered from a beach, but without its own specialist launch vehicle - known as a Supacat - this would be impossible, the RNLI said.

Tom Clark, Scarborough lifeboat''s coxswain said that the vehicle was "an integral part of the RNLI jigsaw".

"We know PS200,000 can be a large amount of money, so we are really hoping that the people of Yorkshire will support the appeal and help reach our target."
