Here are the basics of playing Minecraft in multiplayer on your PC for both Java and Bedrock editions of the game.



1. Java Edition



There are two options for multiplayer Minecraft Java Edition: over LAN or online. In both cases, everyone playing must have the same version of the game, so you might need to update or downgrade your Minecraft version.



How to Play Java Edition Multiplayer LAN



To play over LAN, you must open your network to other players. You can establish a LAN network via Wi-Fi. Alternatively, connect all devices to an internet router with Ethernet cables.



1. Launch the game and click Single Player. 2. Create a new universe or open an existing world. 3. Once you are in the game, press Esc to open the menu and click Open to Lan


1. Choose a game mode for everyone in the LAN party. You can set the game mode and decide if cheats are allowed. By default, Game Mode is set to survival.

1. You can either start your Minecraft LAN server yourself or have someone else do it for you.


2. Start the game and click Multiplayer. Minecraft scans for available worlds over LAN.


3. Select the server you wish to join and click Join Server.

How to Play Java Edition Online Multiplayer



Online gaming is possible by joining a public server or hosting your own server.



How to Start a Server



You can either set up a Minecraft server on your PC, or rent a third-party Minecraft server. You don't have to have an Xbox Live subscription to play Minecraft. The basic steps for self-hosting are quite simple.



1. Download the server.jar file.


2. Accept the EULA.


3. Configure your server with command-line commands


4. Run server.jar.


How to join a Server



We'll be using the Mineplex server for this example.



1. Launch the game, and click Multi Player.


2. Click Add Server.


3. Type Mineplex US in the Server Name field, or choose your own name for the server.


4. In the Server Address box, type us.mineplex.com

2. Select the newly-added server from the server list and click Join Server.

2. Bedrock Edition

You must allow other players to connect to your network in order for you to play over it. Usually all that's required is that all players connect to the same router or Wi-Fi network.

3. Go to the Multiplayer Menu and ensure that Visible to Lan Players is turned on.

How to Play Bedrock Edition Online Multiplayer



Microsoft partnered up with several third-party providers to establish official Bedrock Edition servers.



To play on the Xbox's multiplayer servers, you will need a Gamertag because the Bedrock Edition uses Xbox’s account system. A Gamertag can be obtained by signing up for a Microsoft Account or using an existing Xbox Live account.

You can also add your own third-party servers, or servers you've hosted yourself.



1. Go to Servers tab.


2. Click Add Server.


3. Enter server name, address, port.

How to Play Multiplayer Minecraft with a Child Account



A child account may have limitations when it comes to playing multiplayer Minecraft. First, make sure the child account has an Xbox Live subscription. Then you need to use parental controls to lift the default multiplayer limitations.



1. Log in to your Xbox account Settings with your Microsoft Account.


2. Select the profile for your child account.


3. Navigate to the Xbox One/Windows 10 Online tab.


4. Select Allow to enter the following entries:


Join multiplayer games.


You can create and join clubs.


If you also want to enable chat, do the following:



1. Navigate the Privacy tab.


2. Select Everybody for the following entry:


Others can communicate with them by voice, text, or invitations.
