But What About Having A Virtual Wedding?

Article content The idea of living life in the virtual world has been around for many years. Take Minecraft - players can build houses or even entire villages.

Article content But what do you think about having the wedding online?

A couple was married in the metaverse, and others are complaining about the images.

Sure, many people used Zoom to attend weddings during COVID-19, but what about having the entire wedding take place in the metaverse - an immersive virtual world with every guest in attendance acting as an avatar? It turns out it's already taking place.

And the reactions on the internet have been mixed, with some being thrilled by the idea , while others panning it or pointing out that similar things have been happening for a long time on other platforms, but with far more impressive graphics.

It's really hard to imagine anything more gruelling. I don't think there's anything else I'd rather do other than sit and look at cartoons of people on a conference call. Call it what you will.

The New York Times reported that Traci and Dave Gagnon got married in the metaverse on the Labor Day weekend. The couple held their wedding in person ceremony at the New Hampshire golf club, however, they also held a wedding in the virtual world for their family and friends. Instead of having an actual video conference, the couple decided to let the entire event be held in a virtual location. Photos from the real-life wedding were broadcasted in the virtual one.

The reaction to the story was rapid, with Jezebel proclaiming in a story: "The Metaverse might be the most horrible thing that has ever happen to weddings." minecraft warned that this could make it impossible to politely decline an unwanted invitation to a wedding.

Article content on Twitter there were many users who disagreed that this was something new.

One user wrote, "This was happening 20 year ago, why is this so unique today?"

Others claimed that graphics in games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft were more appealing fifteen years ago.

Another Twitter user wrote "Really difficult for me to think of anything better, or anything I'd rather do rather than watch cartoons of people on a conference calls," "Call it what you will."

Some were enthralled by the idea. "A unique wedding!" Have you ever thought about such a wedding? The possibilities are endless," one wrote. Another thought was the possibility of a metaverse wedding right front the Eiffel Tower.

Article content The Gagnons stated that their wedding could take place in the metaverse, so that guests could attend even if they couldn't physically. Traci's maid of honor, who was sick, was in a position to walk her down the aisle, and Dave's friend, who was unable to attend because his wife has pre-existing health conditions, could deliver the toast.

The metaverse that hosted the wedding was created by Virbela the company that, as per its website, "builds immersive 3D worlds for work, learning and virtual events." With the Virbela platform there is no VR headset is required, and it is compatible with virtually every computer.

Gamers seemed unimpressed with the outcome.

"Graphically, the Metaverse is as impressive as a PlayStation 1 game," according to an article on dexerto.com which is a gaming news site.

Article content Many Twitter users shared photos of weddings that took place several years ago in the online multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. "Look how much nicer it appears," one wrote.

For the Gagnons to have their wedding in the metaverse was a matter of sense since their avatars were able to meet before they had met in person. According to The New York Times interview the couple met at a Las Vegas company event when they were both working for eXp Realty. This company is expanding into virtual work and the metaverse.
