Minecraft Java Edition Will Soon Require An Account With Microsoft Account

Minecraft Java Edition has always functioned pretty much the same way since Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft. Bedrock Edition came along to integrate with the Microsoft account system, but Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island - until now. Java Edition will soon require an Microsoft account to play, but you'll at least get an unpaid cape to help you with your problems.

You'll need to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system in the early part of 2021. Mojang says this is primarily to introduce two-factor authentication to provide increased security, though it'll also lead to improved parental control including chat and invitation block and account integration between Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Regarding Minecraft mods and PvP, Mojang states that nothing will change. Cubepack88 Java and Bedrock will remain completely separate games. You'll be able to continue using your current Java username, but if you're creating a Microsoft account for the first time, you might have to change the usernames of your accounts. If you already have an existing Microsoft account in the first place, you'll be able merge your Minecraft login immediately.

Mojang offers a cape, which was previously the most exclusive Java Edition item: to ease the transition. Participating in the migration process will give you a free cape. Although it doesn't come with the Minecon exclusive patterns however, it will let everyone feel a little royal.

While nothing is changing immediately the situation, players do have concerns, including the fact that Microsoft's stricter terms of service could cause bans to become more common, locking some gamers out of access to Minecraft.

Further details can be found in the FAQ and the official announcement. We'll see how this shakes out in early 2021.
